RESUMO

The goal of this study was to estimate the risk of thyroid cancer following breast cancer and to identify therapeutic and genetic risk factors for the development of thyroid cancer after breast cancer. We followed 10,832 breast cancer patients for a mean of 14 years for new cases of thyroid cancer. All women were genotyped for three Polish founder mutations in BRCA1 (C61G, 4153delA, 5382insC) and four mutations in CHEK2 (1100delC, IVS2 + 1G/A, del5395, I157T). Information was collected on chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapies, and oophorectomy. Of the 10,832 women, 53 (0.49%) developed a second primary thyroid cancer. Based on Polish population statistics, the expected number was 12.4 (SIR = 4.3). The ten-year risk of developing thyroid cancer was higher in women who carried a CHEK2 mutation (1.5%) than in women who carried no mutation (0.9%). The age-adjusted hazard ratio for developing thyroid cancer was 1.89 (0.46-7.79; p = 0.38) for those with a CHEK2 protein-truncating mutation and 2.75 (1.29-5.85; p = 0.009) for those with a CHEK2 missense mutation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Since more than two decades Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) is recommended and widely accepted by BRCA1/2 carriers as a method reducing ovarian cancer risk and improving survival rate. After RRSO, there remains a risk of breast cancer and peritoneal cancer. The characteristics of these neoplasms are not well known. In this study, we determined the selected parameters such as age at cancer diagnosis, time from RRSO to the diagnosis of cancer, and significance of BRCA1 mutation type in patients diagnosed with breast or peritoneal cancer during postoperative follow-up. METHODS: The material comprised of 195 BRCA1 carriers who performed RRSO between years 1999-2012. In this period, 16 patients developed cancer (6-primary breast cancer, 3-contralateral breast cancer, 5-relapse of breast cancer, 2-peritoneal cancer). They were subject of the further analysis. RESULTS: During the follow-up period mean age of patients after RRSO at the time of cancer diagnosis was 53.19. The mean age of patients diagnosed with primary breast cancer was 50, contralateral breast cancer - 58.67, recurrence of breast cancer - 51 and peritoneal cancer 60. The mean time periods from RRSO to the diagnosis of primary, contralateral, recurrence breast cancer were 53, 58.67 and 25,4 months respectively and of peritoneal cancer 46 months. BRCA1 c.5266dupC mutation carriers demonstrated significantly shorter time of cancer development compared to patients carrying c.181T > G and c.4035delA mutations. Peritoneal cancer was only observed in two c.181T > G BRCA1 mutation carriers. CONCLUSIONS: The mean age of cancer diagnosis and the mean time periods from RRSO to the diagnosis of cancer are similar to those observed by other researchers. The carriers of c.181T > G and c.5266dupC BRCA1 mutation should be the subject further studies in context of breast and peritoneal cancer risk or time of cancer development after RRSO, respectively.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the ecotoxicological effects of various compounds in complex airport effluents using a chemical and ecotoxicological integrated strategy. The present work deals with the determination of sum of PCBs, PAHs, pesticides, cations, anions, phenols, anionic, cationic, non-ionic detergents, formaldehyde and metals--as well as TOC and conductivity--in runoff water samples collected from 2009 to 2011 at several locations on two Polish international airports. Two microbiotests (Vibrio fischeri bacteria and the crustacean Thamnocephalus platyurus) have been used to determine the ecotoxicity of airport runoff waters. The levels of many compounds exceeded several or even several tens of times the maximum permissible levels. Analysis of the obtained data shows that samples that displayed maximum toxicity towards the bioindicators Vibrio fischeri were not toxic towards Thamnocephalus platyurus. Levels of toxicity towards T. platyurus are strongly correlated with pollutants that originate from the technological operations related to the maintenance of airport infrastructure. The integrated (chemical-ecotoxicological) approach to environmental contamination assessment in and around airports yields extensive information on the quality of the environment. These methodologies can be then used as tools for tracking the environmental fate of these compounds and for assessing the environmental effect of airports. Subsequently, these data will provide a basis for airport infrastructure management.

RESUMO

The paper presents water-quality evaluation based on an 8-year monitoring programme in the Gdansk Municipality region, on the Southern coast of the Baltic Sea. The studies were carried out from 2000 to 2007 by surface water analysis at 15 various sites within eight watercourses. Sampling sites included rather urbanized or developed lands, farming fields and non-polluted city recreational areas such as parks and forests. Most of the watercourses were sampled monthly at two locations, one within the upper course of the watercourse and the other near its mouth. In all samples, eight parameters of water quality were determined: total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, oxygen saturation, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentration. Interpretation of the obtained results revealed that examination of those basic physicochemical parameters permits to discriminate initially watercourses with respect to level of water contamination. During the research, a large dataset was obtained and it was described by both basic statistical parameters and chemometric method of cluster analysis. The paper presents relations between analysed parameters and influence of land exploitation mode on water quality and describes variation of the results both in space and time.

RESUMO

Bioaerosol formation is an important process of mass and energy exchange between the sea and the atmosphere by means of droplets of marine dust. Studies of marine aerosol activity developed in the last decades of the 20th century. Those studies revealed that concentrations of bacteria in aerosol droplets were hundreds of times higher than were those measured in superficial marine waters. Moreover, it was determined that aerosol activity at sea can influence the sanitary condition of the air, especially in seaside areas. Examinations of air composition in coastal regions were performed on the beaches of the Tri-city, Sobieszewo, and Komary. Airborne microorganisms were also investigated in the marine zone at the Vistula river mouth. The air samples were collected by a filtration method using Sartorius apparatus. The exposed filters were then placed onto agar media in Petri dishes and incubated. All measurements are expressed in CFU/m3, i.e. colony forming units per cubic metre of examined air. Meteorological parameters such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction were also measured. The obtained results revealed statistically significant trends between the total number of bacteria and fungal spores, and the sampling season. The greatest number of microorganisms was noted in spring and autumn. Correlation analysis showed that a statistically significant relationship exists between the microbial abundance and the wind direction, wind speed, and the sampling site location. The maximum number of fungal spores was detected in the areas of Gdynia and Gdansk Brzezno when south-west winds were blowing from the land. The highest number of bacteria was observed at the sampling stations located closest to the Vistula river mouth (Sobieszewo and Komary).
